Welcome

Year 5 is a fun and exciting year group to be a part of! The children will start to develop real independence and self-motivation ready to challenge themselves. The activities and learning this year are preparing the children for their transition in to their final year at primary school.

PE
Children need to ensure that they have appropriate and correct kit for PE lessons throughout the week. Outdoor PE lessons with our coach are every Wednesday afternoon, with our indoor PE time on a Friday afternoon. Kits should remain in school all week, as occasionally days may have to change at short notice.

Classroom monitors/responsibilities
Children are given the chance to take responsibility during the school day, both in and out of the classroom. We also have our class school council representative for the year.  Some children have been chosen as reading tutors and mentors for our younger children, which they love!

Home Learning Expectations
Weekly Reading
Children are expected to read each night and complete their diaries with their current book and the pages they have read. It is expected that an adult will sign their home school diary at least once a week and reading to a parent each day is encouraged as much as possible.

Weekly Spellings
Pupils will receive spellings on a Monday and they will be tested at the end of the week on Friday.

English and Maths
Children are expected to complete one page, which equates to one test, each week from their literacy and numeracy skills books. These are given out on a Friday and are due in the following Thursday, where we mark them together as a class. Any questions that arise from these will be addressed throughout the weekly lessons.  Weekly mental math tests are given on Thursday afternoons.

Any additional homework will be given out, usually Thursdays and the children will be able to hand it in by the following Tuesday.

Please encourage and support your children to complete their homework and return it promptly; it will support the learning carried out in school and help to consolidate their understanding of key concepts so is of huge value to them. This will also prepare for the expectations of year 6 and secondary school.

Equipment
Your child will need:
Book bag
Contact book and Reading book
Water bottle
Jumper or cardigan
Coat
PE kit
Sun hat/cap during the summer terms, with sun cream already applied at home.
Children may also bring a pencil case with equipment they will need, which can be used in the afternoon lessons, however this is not essential.

Please make sure all of your child’s belongings are clearly named to avoid unnecessary losses.
