Year One 

Term 1 - God's Great Plan

In this unit children will have the opportunity to:

Be aware of the beauty of God’s world.
•Explore and respond to the wonders of creation e.g. the seasons.

Hear about the story of Creation from Genesis.
•Talk about its meaning.

Know that God made us because He loves us but the first people, Adam and Eve, made some wrong choices.
•Think of how we can show our love for God.

Be aware that we have a responsibility to look after God’s world.
•Think of the ways we can care for the world.

Hear an appropriate part of the story of Noah and the Flood.
•Think about its promise and hope.

Term 2 - Mary Our Mother

In this unit children will have the opportunity to:

Know that God sent the Angel Gabriel to ask Mary to be the mother of His son.
•Reflect on Mary’s response.

Hear about Mary’s visit to her cousin, Elizabeth.
•Reflect on their good news.

Prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
•Think of how we can prepare for it.

Know the story of the birth of Jesus.
•Be aware that God sent Jesus to help us.

Know that Mary is our mother too.
•Think about how Mary looks after us.

Term 3 - Families and Celebrations

In this unit children will have the opportunity to:

Know that we all belong to a family.
•Think about how we can love and help each other.

Know that Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the temple as a baby.
•Think about why this was a very special occasion.

Know that Jesus belonged to a family.
•Think of things he may have done with his family.

Know about the loss and finding of Jesus.
•Reflect on the feelings of Mary and Joseph when Jesus was lost and then found.

Begin to understand what it means to belong to our Church family.
•Reflect on what we do together.

Know that when we become a member of the Church by receiving the Sacrament of Baptism.
•Talk about what happens when a baby is baptised.

Term 4 - Following Jesus

In this unit children will have the opportunity to:

Hear how Jesus chose some of the first disciples (Lk. 5:1-11).
•Reflect on how we choose our friends.

Know how Jesus taught his disciples to pray (Mt. 6: 7-15).
•Reflect on how we pray.

Hear the story of the Good Samaritan.
•Reflect on the message it has for us as followers of Jesus.

Hear the story of Jesus and his followers going into Jerusalem.
•Think of how we can show that we ‘welcome’ Jesus.

Know that Jesus died on Good Friday but that this is not the end of the story.
•Reflect on the time of waiting before Easter Sunday.

Term 5 - The Resurrection

In this unit children will have the opportunity to:

Know that we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus at Easter.
•Reflect on how we do this.

Know that Jesus rose from the dead on the first Easter Sunday.
•Reflect on what this means for us.

Know that Jesus appeared to the disciples in the Upper Room.
•Think about the times when we have experienced big surprises.

Know that Jesus helped the disciples to understand that he was truly alive.
•Think about how happy everybody was to see him.

Know that Thomas did not believe that Jesus was alive.
•Reflect on times when we don’t understand what is happening.

Know that Jesus returned to heaven after forty days.
•Reflect on the promises he made.

Term 6 - Miracles

In this unit children will have the opportunity to:

Know that Jesus showed his great power when he calmed the wind and the waves.
•Reflect on the fact that we can ask Jesus to help us when we are afraid.

Know that compassion motivates many people to act for the good of others.
•Think about how we can help each other.

Know that Jesus showed his love for sick people when he cured a man who was paralysed.
•Reflect on the great love Jesus has for all people who are sick.

Know that Jesus responded to the faith of the blind man with compassion.
•Reflect on the fact that Jesus will help us when we pray to him.

Hear how Jesus performed his first miracle at the request of his Mother.
•Think about Jesus helping the wedding guests at Cana.

Year Two

Term 1 - The Chosen People

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

•Know we are chosen and gifted by God and we thank God for choosing us by helping others.
•Know why God chose Abraham and that he trusted in God to guide him.
•Know that God chose Moses to help his people and that we are also chosen to help others.
•Understand that Danierl had to be brave and have faith because he was chosen.

Term 2 - Mysteries

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

•Know about and reflect on mysteries.
•Know that there are three persons in one God and we can think about him in different ways.
•Know about and reflect on God’s choice of Mary and Joseph.
•Know that Jesus is God’s gift to the whole world and how we can respond to that.

Term 3 - The Good News

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

•Know that Jesus can turn sadness into joy.
•Know that we should always remember to thank Jesus for his help.
•Know that Jesus used his power to help others and reflect on the importance of these events.
•Know that Jesus brought the good news of God’s love and reflect on what this means for us.

Term 4 - The Mass

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

•Know and reflect on the importance of the celebration of the Mass.
•Know about the readings in Mass and why we should listen to them.
•Know that at the offertory we offer gifts to God.
•Know and appreciate that at the Consecration the bread and wine are changed into Jesus.

Term 5 - Eastertide

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

•Know that Jesus rose from the dead and still lives to be with us.
•Know that Jesus told the disciples that he would go back to Heaven but promised that the Holy Spirit would come.
•Know that Jesus returned to Heaven and promised to return again and this gives us hope.
•Know the story of the coming of the Holy Spirit on the apostles and that the Holy Spirit is promised to us.

Term 6 - The Church is Born

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

•Know that when the apostles received the Holy Spirit they spread the good news and know that we can help to spread the good news.
•Know about the early Christian community and understand that we are part of the Christian community today.
•Know that the apostles realised that God could work through them.
•Know the story of Peter’s escape from prison and reflect on its meaning.

Year Three 

Term 1 - The Christian Family

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

Know that we all belong to a family.
•Think about how we can help our family.

Know what it means to belong to the family of the Church.
•Reflect on how the family of the Church helps us.

Know that we join the Church when we receive the Sacrament of Baptism.
•Think about what this Sacrament does for us.

Understand what happens when we receive the Sacrament of Baptism.
•Reflect on the meaning of the Sacrament of Baptism.

Know about some of the signs and symbols used in the Sacrament of Baptism.
•Reflect on why they are used.

Know about the promises made at Baptism by parents and godparents.
•Think about the importance of keeping promises.

Term 2 - Mary, Mother of God

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

Know that God chose Mary to be the Mother of His Son.
•Think about the importance of being chosen.

Know that Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth.
•Think about how we can help each other.

Know about the mystery of the Incarnation.
•Reflect on mysteries.

Understand that Advent is a time to prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
•Think about how we can prepare.

Know about the birth of Jesus.
•Reflect on what this means for us.

Know that the wise men came to worship Jesus.
•Think about the gifts we can offer Jesus.

Term 3 - Sacrament of Reconciliation

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

Understand what it means to make wrong choices.
•Reflect on how wrong choices affect us and other people.

Know that Jesus called people to turn away from sin.
•Think about why this is important.

Understand that God always loves us.
•Think of how important this love is for us.

Know what the Sacrament of Reconciliation means.
•Reflect on God’s love and forgiveness.

Know what happens during the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
•Think about what this Sacrament does for us.

Understand the purpose of Lent.
•Reflect on what we can do to prepare for Easter.

Term 4 - Celebrating the Mass

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

Know what happened at the Last Supper.
•Reflect on how the Mass makes this real for us.

Understand what happens at the beginning of Mass.
•Think about why we say ‘sorry’.

Understand the importance of the Readings at Mass.
•Reflect on how we listen to God’s word.

Know what happens at the Offertory and Consecration.
•Think about the offerings we can make.

Know that it is Jesus we receive in Holy Communion.
•Reflect on this very great gift for us.

Be familiar with your parish church.
•Reflect on its importance for you.

Term 5 - Celebrating Easter and Pentecost

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

Explore how the Church celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus.
•Think about how we can celebrate Jesus’ Resurrection.

Know that Jesus appeared to some of his disciples on the road to Emmaus.
•Think about what we can learn from this experience.

Know what Jesus said to Thomas when he did not believe he had risen from the dead.
•Reflect on the meaning of these words for us.

Know that Jesus returned to heaven.
•Reflect on what this means for us.

Know what happened at Pentecost.
•Reflect on how it changed the apostles.

Term 6 - Being a Christian

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

Begin to understand what being a Christian involves.
•Reflect on what it means for us.

Know what Jesus teaches about helping others.
•Reflect on how we can help others.

Know how St. Paul had to learn to be a Christian.
•Think about what we can learn from his experience.

Know that the Sacraments are a meeting with Jesus.
•Be aware that in the Sacraments we receive Jesus’ great love.

Know about people who use their gifts to help others.
•Think about what we can learn from them.

Begin to understand the importance of prayer.
•Think about different ways of praying.

Year Four 

Term 1 - The Bible

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

Know that the Bible is an account of God’s relationship with His people.
•Reflect on how the Bible can help us.

Know that God calls Abraham.
•Think about the challenges and blessings Abraham experienced.

Know about God’s call to Joseph.
•Reflect on God’s plan for him.

Know about God’s call to Moses.
•Reflect on what we can learn from his experience.

Know that David was chosen by God.
•Reflect on David’s trust in God.

Know that God speaks to us in the Bible.
•Reflect on some things God tells us.

Term 2 - Trust In God

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

Understand the importance of trusting in God.
•Be aware that it is not always easy for us to trust.

Know about God’s promise to Zechariah.
•Reflect on how Zechariah had to trust in God.

Know that Mary trusted in God.
•Reflect on what we can learn from Mary.

Know how Joseph put his trust in God.
•Be aware that sometimes we need help to trust in God.

Know that God fulfilled His promise to Mary when Jesus was born.
•Reflect on the importance of the birth of Jesus for us.

Know why God sent Jesus to earth.
•Reflect on who Jesus is for us.

Term 3 - Jesus the Teacher

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

Know that Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the Temple.
•Reflect on what this means for us.

Know that Jesus was born as a Jew.
•Reflect on how Mary and Joseph found Jesus in the Temple.

Know about the Baptism of Jesus.
•Reflect on what Jesus’ baptism means for us.

Know that Jesus called people to follow him.
•Be aware that we are also called to follow Jesus.

Know that Jesus travelled around teaching people.
•Think about the Good News that Jesus teaches.

Know some of the parables Jesus used to teach people.
•Reflect on the meaning of the parables for us.

Know that Jesus came to show us the way to live. (The Beatitudes).
•Think of ways in which we can be true followers of Jesus.

Term 4 - Jesus the Saviour

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

Know that Jesus is truly God and, as man, truly human.
•Reflect on what this means for us.

Know about Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem.
•Think about the importance of Holy Week for us.

Understand what happened on Holy Thursday.
•Reflect on how we can show our love for Jesus.

Know what happened on Good Friday.
•Reflect on the suffering of Jesus.

Begin to understand why Jesus died on the Cross.
•Think about what this means for us.

Understand what happened on Easter Sunday.
•Reflect on the importance for us of the resurrection of Jesus.

Term 5 - The Early Christians

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

Know that Jesus made Peter Head of the Church.
•Think about what this means for all Christians.

Know that the Church began at Pentecost.
•Think about what the Holy Spirit is able to do.

Know what happened to Stephen and Saul.
•Reflect on how God brings good out of evil.

Know about the challenges of being an apostle.
•Reflect on how God worked through Paul and Silas.

Know about Paul’s missionary journeys.
•Reflect on Paul’s faith and courage.

Know about the teaching of the Apostles.
•Reflect on how this teaching helps us today.

Term 6 - The Church

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

Understand that the Church is a family.
•Be aware that we belong to the Church.

Understand that the Church is ‘good news’ for people.
•Be aware that this ‘good news’ is also for us.

Know about the different seasons in the Church’s year.
•Think about why these times are important for us.

Know about the Communion of Saints and the Holy Souls.
•Be aware of how they can help us.

Know about God’s call to individuals.
•Reflect on their responses.

Deepen our understanding of Mary.
•Reflect on how she can help all of us.

Year Five 

Term 1 - Creation

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

Know that for a long time people have asked questions about Creation.
•Reflect on some important responses.

Know about the story of Creation in the Bible.
•Reflect on the importance of this story.

Know about the story of the Fall.
•Think about how it helps us to understand suffering in the world.

Understand that God calls us to care for creation.
•Be aware of our responsibilities.

Know about some of God’s great helpers.
•Reflect on what we can learn from them.

Be aware of God’s great gifts to us.
•Reflect on the importance of our own gifts.

Term 2 - God's Covenants

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

Understand the meaning of covenant.
•Reflect on God’s covenant with Noah.

Know about the covenant God made with Abraham.
•Reflect on Abraham’s trust in God.

Understand that God guides and challenges His people.
•Be aware of our need to grow in faith and trust in God.

Know that God made a covenant with Moses and the Israelites.
•Be aware that this covenant is also made with us.

Know that God sends prophets to remind His People of His covenant.
•Reflect on the message of the prophets for us.

Know that God makes a New Covenant with us.
•Reflect on our part in the New Covenant.

Term 3 - Inspirational People

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

Know that Jesus has come for everyone.
•Reflect on how we can join his mission.

Understand what it means to be a follower of Jesus.
•Reflect on what it means for you.

Know that the Beatitudes show us the way to live.
•Think of ways they can help us to be true followers of Jesus.

Understand why Jesus blessed the merciful.
•Think about what this means for us.

Know why Jesus blessed the pure in heart.
•Reflect on the presence of God within you.

Know why Jesus blessed those persecuted for doing what is right.
•Think of what you can do to help those suffering today.

Understand why Jesus blessed the poor in spirit.
•Reflect on what we can learn from Fr. Arrupe.

Know that the meek are blessed.
•Reflect on the importance of trying to do God’s will.

Know what it means to be a saint.
•Think about how it could affect your life.

Term 4 - Reconciliation

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

Understand that actions have consequences.
•Reflect on some of the consequences of actions.

Understand that Mary, our Mother untangles knots of sin.
•Reflect on how Mary is always ready to help us.

Know about God’s love and forgiveness.
•Reflect on what this means for us.

Understand the meaning of sin.
•Reflect on how sin hurts us, others and our relationship with God.

Know what happens in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
•Reflect on how this sacrament helps us.

Understand that God is love and always ready to forgive.
•Reflect on what it means to experience forgiveness.

Term 5 - Life in the Risen Jesus

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

Know that Jesus is risen from the dead.
•Reflect on what the Resurrection of Jesus means for us.

Understand the meaning of the Resurrection.
•Reflect on the importance of the Resurrection for us.

Know that the Spirit of Jesus works in many ways.
•Reflect on the Spirit at work in the Church.

Know that Jesus is present among us in different ways.
•Reflect on how we can be present with Jesus.

Know that there are different ways of praying.
•Explore different ways of praying.

Understand how Jesus teaches us to pray.
•Reflect on the importance of prayer for us.

Term 6 - Other Faiths

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

Know what the Church teaches about other faiths.
•Reflect on the teaching of the Church for us.

Understand what we believe about our Catholic Faith.
•Reflect on our beliefs.

Know some important Jewish beliefs.
•Think about their importance.

Know about some Jewish celebrations.
•Reflect on the meaning of them.

Know some of the beliefs we share with Jews and the differences between us.
•Reflect on their importance for us.

Know some significant Muslim beliefs.
•Think about their importance.

Understand some important practices of Muslims.
•Reflect on the importance of prayer.

Know some of the beliefs we share with Muslims and some of the differences between us.
•Think about what we can do together.

Year Six

Term 1 - The Kingdom of God

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

•reflect on what the Kingdom of God is like.
•reflect on the importance of responding to the invitation to the Kingdom.
•know that everyone is called to enter the Kingdom and reflect on our response.
•reflect on words and deeds necessary to show commitment to the Kingdom.
•know that Jesus’ miracles reflected the beginning of the Kingdom and show us what God is like.

Term 2 - Justice

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

•understand what justice is and know that we are all called to work for it.
•know that the prophets spoke out against injustice e.g. Elijah and John the Baptist.
•know that God calls all of us to speak out against injustice.
•know about individuals who have been persecuted for speaking out about injustice and reflect on the cost of commitment.
•be aware that Christians across the world speak up for justice and that justice starts with each one of us. •know that in Advent we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
•be aware that our Christmas customs are drawn from different countries and cultures.

Term 3 - Jesus the Bread of Life

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

•know and think about the story of the Passover.
•know what happened at the Last Supper and reflect on what this means for us.
•understand the Penitential Rite and the Liturgy of the Word in the Mass and think about our participation in them.
•understand the Offertory, Consecration and Communion and reflect on our part in them.
•know that Jesus has chosen to stay with us in a special way in the Blessed Sacrament.

Term 4 - Jesus the Son of God

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

•know that Jesus’ miracles led many to believe that he was the Son of God and think about what this means for us.
•understand why Jesus washed the Disciples’ feet and reflect on the meaning this has for us.
•know about the Passion and Death of Jesus and consider its importance for us.
•understand and reflect on what the Resurrection of Jesus means for us.

Term 5 - The Work of the Apostles

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

•know and reflect on our calling to be disciples of Jesus.
•know that the Apostles were ordinary people.
•know that the Apostles were people with strengths and weaknesses just as we are.
•know how the Apostles changed when they received the Holy Spirit and reflect on how we can be changed. •know about the early Christian community (Acts 3: 1-10; 4:32-35) and our relationship to it.
•know and think about the persecution of the Apostles.
•know and reflect on the preaching of the Apostles.

Term 6 - Called to Serve

In this unit we will have the opportunity to:

•be aware of Jesus’ teaching on and example of service and know how we should try to be like him. •recognise that God has given all of us gifts and talents to use in the service of him and his people.
•be aware of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and understand that we receive this gifts in a particular way in the Sacrament of Confirmation.
•know and reflect on some of the different ways we can serve God.
•know and think about the Sacraments of Marriage and Holy Orders.
